Mission Description
Discovering new materials is difficult and slow. It takes 10-30 years from discovery to commercialization of a new functional materials. It is now urgent to develop and adopt 'autonomous lab' to optimize the material development process. In the era of the 4th industrial revolution, the appearance of laboratory is already changing rapidly. Graduate students and researchers will no longer spend a huge amount of time on repetitive experiments. Humans will increasingly spend less time in the lab, instead robots and AI will fill the gap and would conduct experiment in a smart manner.
In line with this trend, Computational Science Research Center (CSRC) try to lead the paradigm of 'autonomous lab for materials development. Creating the autonomous lab is a multidisciplinary task that combines various independent research fields. Artificial Intelligence is a key component that is used to predict material properties and to suggest subsequent synthetic routes. Robotics and computer vision, on the other hand, will play roles in automating the process and analyzing the results. CSRC hopes to combine these technologies from different research fields into a unified platform. For next 10 years, CSRC will accelerate the completion of autonomous lab, and contribute to its distribution.
